Vehicle most in keeping with the spirit of the event

• The Blonde Bombshells, for fielding a team 50% of whom were legally unable to drive (special kudos for Sarah for undertaking her second rally without a license)

• The Peugeot 205 boys, for bringing a lowered sports car with total disregard for off-road suitability, purely because they’d always wanted one

• The Allegro, for being officially the worst car ever made – something the team magnificently ignored throughout the trip.

• The hearse. Because it’s a hearse.

And the winner is: the Allegro

Best Example of Poor Decision Making

• Nick and Simon in the Porsche for allowing a terrible Latvian rally driver behind the wheel of the 924

• Kaspers for saying he didn’t need to fill up at a petrol station, running out of fuel 200 metres further down the road and blaming the Land Rover for not having a fuel light

• Kaspers for allowing Pete to drive the rescue vehicle when almost every other car was hubcab deep in freezing Latvian mud

• The Brokeback Beemer team, for bringing a car that was actually worth something

And the winner is: Brokeback Beemer

Most Maximum Homoerotic Moment

• Fran and Jenny, for setting the initial bar dauntingly high by snogging in the bar on the first night

• Chris (for whipping Charles’ naked arse in the hotel with his belt in front of everyone in the hotel in Estonia)

• All eight of the naked men who participated in the mass whipping with birch twigs in the sauna

• Imogen for snogging a teenage Russian lesbian in a children’s playground during Nick’s birthday party

• Imogen: for shunting a (very nice) Latvian next to an Estonian police car and opposite an Estonian police station, while dressed in a basque and flat cap

• Sarah: for mistakenly hitting the accelerator rather than the brake while driving on to the small hand-operated Latvian car ferry, and nearly taking out the ferry man

• Jon: for putting the hearse in reverse and revving while being towed out of a small Latvian mid-road lake by Kaspers

• Matt for randomly headbutting the hearse on the first night

And the winner is: Sarah

Best Backtrack from Potential Disaster

• Sophie: for surviving potentially lethal fishtailing while drag racing in the Estonian gravel pit

• The team who managed to clean the BMW before the Brokeback boys got out of bed, thus averting the first banger rally murder

• Kaspers for convincing Pete to go home, despite their being really good mates

• Matt and Dave for somehow manoeuvring Pete to bed on the night in the water mill (although for those who endured his subsequent vomiting and pissing may feel that there was still a fair amount of unaverted disaster too)

And the winner is: initially Matt and Dave (as selected by Kaspers) but subsequently unanimously overruled on the night and awarded to Kaspers instead

Most Maximum Near Death Experience

• Nick in the Porsche (when the terrible Latvian rally driver is driving)

• Nick in the Porsche (when he was driving)

• Chris when he reversed the Saab at 50mph on the wrong side of a main road without looking to see if anything was coming first (although come to think of it, the near death experience nomination should probably go to the poor Latvians coming the other way, as Chris was far too pissed to notice any experience, near-death or otherwise)

• Raj in the Rover, for fishtailing up a bank and nearly tipping the car over completely

• Matt hoofing it up a 65 foot chimney in an abandoned nuclear military base with magnificent distain for the very rusty state of the ladder

And the winner is…. Nick in the Porsche with the Latvian rally driver

Most Maximum Confused Latvian/Estonian

• The pizza delivery guy in Estonia who, on receiving an order for 25 pizzas and 100 beers, drove over to the hotel before cooking anything to check it wasn’t a hoax

• The man on the bicycle in the Latvian forest who, on seeing the hearse go past, stopped cycling and took off his hat as a mark of respect – and then watched the rest of the “funeral” convoy go past with mounting confusion

• The parking attendant at the Hotel Toss, whose job it is to stop cars hitting each other, when everyone started ramming each other

• The man in the tractor driving through the Latvian forest when Imogen skied past dressed as a showgirl and being towed by a gold Saab

And the winner is: the man in the tractor. Due to unavailability of said tractor driver, award accepted on his behalf by fellow Baltic Kaspers.

Most Maximum Stuck Vehicle

• The Shaguar in the Estonian gravel pit

• The Shaguar in the mud (trip lesson: big cats don’t like water)

• The Shaguar on the very first icy road

• The Shaguar on second subsequent icy road

And the winner is (a very close contest, this one): the Shaguar in the gravel pit

Best Quote:

• “Harder, Harder” – Chris, whenever whipping was involved

• “Jon, it’s in reverse” – everyone, while the hearse was being towed out of the lake

• “no, but it’s funny” – the Allegro boys at the end of driving through insanely muddy woodland very fast, on being asked over CB if they could see anything at all through their Perspex windscreen

And the winner is: Well, we kind of fucked this one up, because we forgot about “maximum shiny” which was so clearly the line of the trip, so the while the winner was the Allegro boys, this was clearly wrong and very rightly over ruled. Kaspers, you win!

The Austin Powers Award for International Man of Mystery

• Rob, for unexpected and super suave piano playing abilities, magnificent nonchalance and insouciance while swimming in a frozen Estonian lake, maintenance of cool at all times and superlative suit-wearing on the final day

• Brad, for services to womankind, specifically managing to be the only boy in a sauna full of girls whipping each other, making full use of the orgy room and on-ice backing dancer abilities

• Carl, for word-perfect acapella karaoke and awe inspiring breakdancing abilities

And the winner of perhaps the most close run contest of these awards: Brad

• The Allegro: for pulling off one of the best bodges in the history of banger rallying

• Carl: for dropping 30MPH off his speedo when asked to sing the chorus of Yellow Submarine and drive at the same time, thus conclusively proving that men can’t multi-task

• The Lewis Hamilton Rookie award: the Shaguar: for an epic paint job and nearly stealing the event on their first ever rally

• The Blonde Bombshells: for still being unable to work out the time difference between London and Latvia after nine days away
