\"Hydrogen Generators\"
Status : Untested
Another device which is doing well at the moment is the \"Hydrogen generator\" for your car. Google it and see how many of these things have their own websites. Well first off it\'s a pyramid scheme (the more you sell, the cheaper it gets) so that should be a red flag straight away. As usual the sites are riddled with technobabble to try to confuse you, and there\'s no real contact address other than that provided if you want to sell it yourself. The distributors of these devices make claims like this: Hydrogen, in combinations with other electrolyzed gases (actually Brown\'s gas), introduced into the intake manifold of your engine, will accelerate the flame spread during combustion, thereby getting more of the vaporized fuel to combust during the initial part of the power stroke, Well this is sort of true - hydrogen would give you more bang for your buck. It could also make your engine explode. The problem with hydrogen is generating it. These devices claim to be able to generate 2 litres of hydrogen gas every minute simply using a 12v battery, pulling 30amps. 30amps? Umm. Have a poke around in your fusebox - are any of the circuits in your car currently 30amps? Likely not. The typical demand on a car\'s charging system (and thus the alternator) is about 75amps for the entire car in a worst-case scenario. (Figure 25A for the rear window heater, 20A for the fan on high, 15A for low beams, 6A for windscreen wipers etc. etc). If you now add a 30A device to your car, the charging system is going to fail. But back to hydrogen generation. If it really was as easy as these devices claim, then we\'d all be driving around in hydrogen fuel-cell cars. The simple fact of life is that fuel-cell vehicles are not popular yet because of the expense and difficulty in generating the hydrogen itself.
Then there\'s the prickly subject of Hydrogen Embrittlement. Basically when hydrogen gas is present around certain metals for long enough (steel and aluminium are very susceptible), it dissolves into the structure of the metal and can cause cracking and failure. Which makes it doubly curious why the hydrogen tank for most of these devices appears to be made of thin aluminium, much like an in-line fuel filter. Most of these sites touch briefly on hydrogen embrittlement by first telling you you\'re too stupid to understand it, and then by presenting a paragraph of technobabble so fraught with inaccuracy as to make a chemist cry into his lab coat.
As a final note, one of the big hitters in this field is United Nuclear. Their website looks fantastic, and note that their hydrogen generator is so big you have to run it off its own power source outsite your car. But know one thing about United Nuclear : it\'s run by the infamous Bob Lazar, of \"I\'ve worked on UFOs but can\'t prove it\" fame.
I\'ve not tested one of these things for myself, but if you have, I\'d like to hear from you. In the meantime, remember what I say about all these things - if it really worked, the car manufacturers would be falling over themselves to put them in every car.
Comments. I\'ve had a couple of emails from people who\'ve actually used these devices on their cars. Their stories are all pretty much the same, and this is one example from reader Eric:
Chris. Just wanted you to know that I have a hydrogen generator from www.savefuel.ca/...
on my 99 Beetle. I did not see any real increase or change in hp or milage. I purchased the unit and it looks nothing like what they have on the website. I will give them this though: it does make hydrogen Being curious, I took a ziplock bag and put it over the end of the output hose. It took a long time to fill. When I touched a match to itthe gas in the bag ignited. It does draw a lot of power to a point of possible electrical meltdown (they claim their new unit draws less power). So now I don\'t use it anymore. When I purchased mine it was $130 I see now the prices have gone up quit a bit.
